Every rating on RateTheHeat captures the full experience of a hot sauce. Here's how our rating system works.
Your overall personal enjoyment of the sauce. This is subjective — how much did you like it? Whether it's the flavor profile, the heat level, or just how well it paired with your favorite food, this score captures your personal experience.
How hot the sauce actually is on your palate. This is a standalone rating measuring pure heat intensity — not how accurate the label is, but how much burn you actually feel. A mild sauce might be a 2, while an extreme ghost pepper sauce could hit 9 or 10.
Heat vs. Heat Accuracy: These are different things! "Heat" measures how spicy the sauce actually is. "Heat Accuracy" (a TrueHeat dimension) measures how well the sauce's stated heat level matches reality. A sauce labeled "Mild" that actually burns like fire would have high Heat but low Heat Accuracy.
The TrueHeat™ Score is a weighted composite of 5 dimensions that capture the quality and character of a hot sauce. Each dimension is rated 1-10, and they combine to form an overall quality score.
How accurately the sauce matches its stated heat level. If a sauce claims to be "Medium" and delivers a true medium heat experience, it scores high. Misleading labels score low.
Overall taste quality and balance of flavors. Does the sauce have depth, complexity, and a well-balanced profile? Great sauces deliver more than just heat — they deliver memorable flavor.
Consistency and texture of the sauce. Is it too watery, too thick, or just right? The ideal viscosity depends on the sauce style, but good texture enhances the experience.
How well the sauce pairs with different foods. A versatile sauce works on tacos, wings, pizza, eggs, and more. Specialized sauces may excel in specific contexts.
How innovative or distinctive the sauce is. Does it bring something new to the table? Unique ingredient combinations, unexpected flavor profiles, or creative approaches stand out.
The TrueHeat™ composite is a weighted average:
TrueHeat = (Heat Accuracy × 0.30) + (Flavor × 0.30) + (Viscosity × 0.15) + (Versatility × 0.15) + (Uniqueness × 0.10)Each dimension is scored from 1 to 10 in 0.25 increments, giving you fine control over your ratings.
These three scores together give a complete picture of any sauce. Find the balance that matters to you — whether you're chasing extreme heat, incredible flavor, or the perfect all-rounder.
